Data Centre Capacity Planning FAQs
The following table contains the most frequently asked questions with some possible answers/solutions

Question Answer
What is Capacity Planning?Capacity Planning defines the power and cooling loads for your Computer Room. It is essential to understand the maximum amount that IT requires, so that plant (e.g. AC units, UPSs and generators) can be sized accordingly when the room is first designed. Once the room is running it enables you to keep an an eye on the used capacity so that you can plan for any required growth
How do I undertake a Capacity Planning Exercise?Companies such as END2END can perform this exercise or if you want to do a rough estimate yourself:
For a new room
- Calculate the loads for power and heat for your IT estate. These will normally be listed in the technical specification for the device, however, these figures are often inflated (by 50% in some cases). This figure can then be used to size your UPS and Air Conditioning Requirements
- Calculate the load for power of the selected AC units
- Add the results together to get max power load required for the room

For an Existing Room
- Analyse your UPS readings to determine the operating loads for the current IT equipment
- Subtract these from the maximum supported by the UPS

- You now have the maximum growth that the room can sustain
